Akhalkalaki HPP

28 September, 2021

The portfolio of the Caucasus Clean Energy Holding includes the hydropower plants being operated (Bakhvi 3 HPP and Lakhami HPP), in the construction stage (Akhalkalaki HPP) and currently in the study stage (Bakhvi 1 HPP).

On September 8 and 9, 2021, the Advisory Board members of the Bakhvi 1 Hydropower Plant Project working on the environmental and social issues visited Akhalkalaki. During the visit, the Advisory Board members held a session in Akhaltsikhe and learned about new developments related to the Bakhvi 1 Hydropower Plant Project. In particular, the company representatives shared information with the Board members about the Bakhvi 1 HPP Environmental Impact Assessment preparation process, ongoing studies and social activities. On the second day of the trip, the Board members observed ongoing works at the Akhalkalaki HPP Project construction site.

The Akhalkalaki HPP is a small run-of-the-river hydropower plant project, which is planned to be constructed on the Paravani river and its right tributary, Korkhistskali. The project includes two powerhouses with a separate fishway and fishpass intended for each and two underground penstocks, two HPP headworks, common substation and transmission line. The installed capacity of the project is 9.1 MW with annual power generation 45 GWh. For the Akhalkalaki Hydropower Plant has been developed an environmental and social issues management plan, which ensures the project development in compliance with environmental and social issues management standards. To have a positive impact on the local economic situation, in partnership with local authorities and village residents, a list of social projects has been developed to be carried out in three adjacent villages.

The Advisory Board members of the Bakhvi 1 HPP observed the hydropower plant construction site and toured one of the social projects, the Orja Irrigation Pumping Station, which after its rehabilitation completion has enabled locals to irrigate about 600-700 ha of arable land.

The Akhalkalaki HPP Project, the investor of which is the CCEH, is a good example of the company focus on a dialogue with local population and the principles on which the CCEH plans and carries out its projects.

Please see the video material describing the visit to Akhalkalaki and comments by the Advisory Board members in a video file we prepared.
